Come back, Josh Come back, Troy We’re all waiting to hear the tale of your excellent adventure. Inuit, Vikings, Hawaiians, All Sea-Peoples across the world have learned to fear the sea. They respectfully ply the waters And pay the exacting toll (A sacrifice of Brothers) And some are rewarded Come back, Josh Come back, Troy We’re all waiting to hear the tale of your sobering adventure. Those of us who love the sea know that the sea can be treacherous. She is beautiful, enticing, dangerous, indifferent. She is never to be trusted. Sailors, scientists, veteran fisherman, or two boys on a frolic, The sea makes promises to all, Then seeks to devour. Guarding her secrets and hiding her crimes. So come back, Josh Come back, Troy Come quickly into the arms of those who would hold you And hear the tale of your fearful adventure. I find myself standing at the ocean’s edge My eyes wrestling with the horizon Willing with my entire being That the tide would reverse, That the wind would shift direction, And the sea would lovingly carry you back And deposit you safely on the sand. Where are you, Josh? Where are you, Troy? What delays you? Can’t you hear our yearning hearts crying out to you from across the waves? Hurry back, Boys Please hurry back Return from the terrible sea Return into the warmth, the solace, and the love of many arms agonizing to hold you once again. Come back, Josh Come back, Troy We’re all waiting to hear the tale of your harrowing adventure. The world cannot bear to be eclipsed of your joyous light so soon. (Written shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning, 4/27/05, the day the Coast Guard called off the search for the missing boys.)
