When you were first born and I held you in my arms, and your eyes looked up at me, and you were quieted, That was good for me. When we took you to Charlestown Landing, and you sat on my shoulders and vomited your formula in my hair (I washed it out in the stagnant pond water), That was good for me. When I left the ship at 4:00pm after a usual difficult day, and you, seeing me from your car seat, would start grinning and kicking, drool running down your chin, That was good for me. When you, with great indignation, repeated the epithets I hurled at other drivers- word for word, That was good for me. When I saw you were serious about school, working hard and getting good grades, That was good for me. When I saw you, with sheer determination, push past the bigger players to get the puck, That was good for me. When you were willing to learn to bait your own hook, so I could fish, too, That was good for me. When you would help your single father finish the grocery shopping- late at night, That was good for me. When the battery was weak, the wind had died, the falling tide was strong, and we couldn't get back upriver, and you sat quietly, despite apprehension, and trusted, That was good for me. When you would tutor me on the trumpet, helping me to get those upper staff notes, That was good for me. When you would point out my bad driving habits, framed in a polite question, That was good for me. When you laughed at my jokes, even when no one else thought they were funny, That was good for me. When my neck was sore from teaching you a stick-shift, then later watching you pull away smoothly, That was good for me. When I realized that a daughter is the one woman a man can't complain about, because he raised her, That was good for me. In all these things, and many more, God has used you to touch my heart, to make me think, and to humble me. Truly, God gave me a great gift when He put you in my life. It has made me a better man. Thank you.
